Why bugs should be in our diet

We often think of bugs as just creepy crawly critters that pester us when we're eating outside or lurking inside our homes. These perceptions are generally due to a lack of knowledge about the importance of insects and how much they contribute to our lives as humans on earth.

There are millions of people worldwide that not only rejoice at the sight of these arthropods but they also use them as a protein source. Eating bugs is a worldwide phenomenon except in North America. But there are many good reasons why we should indulge.

THEY ARE GOOD FOR YOU

Bugs pack more protein per unit than other protein sources such as beef or pork. Edible insects may have superior health benefits due to their high levels of vitamin B12, iron, zinc, fiber, essential amino acids, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and antioxidants as well.

GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Whether it's conserving water, grains, land use, or ecosystems, the insect is far superior to livestock or chickens. Not only do they need less space to breed and grow but they also require far less resources. Think about how much an average cow needs to consume to be healthy and ready to go to market. Multiply that by millions (39 million in the United States alone each year) and we can see a problem. In this age of increasing climate change and water becoming an issue around the world for millions of people, conserving this one resource alone could make a significant contribution to the environment and human well being also. Bugs are sustainable and do not require the land or resource consumption that other animals do. Click the picture below to order your bbq flavored crickets right to your door!

THEY ARE DELICIOUS

Bugs might not look all that appetizing to the western mind but looks are deceiving. Fried crickets in various tastes makes for a very yummy snack (and a lot healthier than potato chips). You also have mealworms and even ants (which have a great citrus flavor). If eating bugs whole freaks you out still, consider insect spices or even cricket or ant powder which can add a nice delicate flavor to almost any dish! There are even more reasons to accept bugs as a great, sustainable, delicious new food source. Don't be afraid to give it a try and you'll be doing your part to not only help the planet but also keeping you healthy in the process.
