Watching CSI shows doesn't make for a better criminal

It's been said that you should never date a woman who watches true crime and detective shows because she knows how to get away with murder! This is an old joke but how many of us watch these types of programs and think " You know what? I believe I could get away with this crime"?

Well, I hate to ruin your fantasy but scientists say that watching these kinds of shows do not make for a better criminal.

In this study, psychologists looked at data from the FBI and the BKA (the German counterpart). They looked specifically at detection rates before the television series CSI and after. They then interviewed 28 prisoners in various correctional facilities and asked them if watching CSI (a very popular television series dealing with forensic science) made them feel they could more easily get away with a crime.

Psychologists then put together an elaborate experiment to see if test subjects who watched CSI were more efficient at escaping detection than those who did not watch.

The results? The same rate of detection was almost equal between both groups. However, men covered up their mock crimes better and younger people did better than older people. Also, the more educated the test subject was the less likely they would be detected.

"Every time something new emerges there are people who focus in one aspect and without a full and proper consideration sense possible risks and thus call for bans." The findings in this context can be said to pour cold water on attitudes like this. "We can now dispel certain of the myths that have been coursing through the media and other publications for the past 20 years because we are able to state with relative certainty that people who watch CSI are no better at covering their tracks than other people."

Watching all those crime shows doesn't make you a better criminal but being an educated young male helps a little. Stay in school, kids! Click below for the original article.
