Why are you scared of bugs?

Insects and other arthropods outnumber humans by a lot. Currently, there are about 1 million identified insect species but most estimates say there are likely 6-8 million more waiting to be discovered. This means there are around 1.5 BILLION insects for every one person in the world. So they truly are dominant in terms of numbers.

We aren't born with an aversion to bugs. This generally develops later in life either through experience (getting stung by a bee for example) or through how we see our parents respond to them. But why does this continue into adulthood? After all, only a small percentage of insects are dangerous to us and some are just considered pests that might be annoying.

The cause of this fear probably lies because of inaccurate information and evolution. We have an evolutionary reaction to certain things because of a natural response to dangerous situations. It's a built-in defence mechanism that triggers us to respond to anything we have come to believe is going to harm us. This is a good thing in general. If you see a snake that you can't identify as venomous or not you'll quickly avoid getting within striking distance. The same applies to certain insects that we may see as potentially harmful.

However, as I stated previously, only a small percent of insects can hurt or kill you. With proper education about the worlds most abundant group of animals you'll be able to determine the harmful from the harmless and probably be able to truly appreciate all the life they provide for us. Our food, textiles, forests, and health are all dependent on insects and bugs. Without them we would die in short order.

By spending time in nature and observing our many legged friends along with some basic knowledge, you can go from fearful to amazed at these little worlds they inhabit. There are many basic entomology classes online to get started and I suggest using them to gain a new understanding of these amazing animals.
